Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin: What’s the Difference and How to Choose the Right Care

Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin: What’s the Difference and How to Choose the Right Care

Our skin type dictates the rules of skincare. To get the most out of beauty treatments, it’s important to understand the nuances.

One of these nuances is dry versus dehydrated skin. Not everyone knows that these two concepts differ significantly in both their causes and care strategies.

Mistakenly thinking that you have “just dry” skin, you might choose the wrong products: for example, using an overly rich cream when your skin actually needs hydration. Or, on the contrary, drinking plenty of water but not nourishing the skin with oils. As a result, improper care can increase discomfort: the skin will lose elasticity, react more sharply to external irritants, and be prone to premature aging.

Dermatologist Dr. Deanne Mraz, Yale, emphasizes: dehydrated skin needs hydration, while dry skin lacks natural oils, namely sebum.

Below you will find a detailed overview and recommendations that will help you understand your skin’s needs and choose effective care even at home.

Dry Skin

Causes: genetics and/or hormones. In this case, the body produces insufficient amounts of skin oil (sebum).

Sensation: constant dryness, flaking, and irritation.

Important: dry skin is not related to seasons or climate. It is simply a skin type — a given that should be accepted and taken into account.

Care:
● Regular use of nourishing, oil-based products to restore the skin’s lipid barrier: with ceramides, jojoba oil, shea butter, etc.
● Use gentle, delicate cleansing products (without sulfates and alcohol). Important: water for washing should not be hot.
● Mild exfoliation (for example, enzymatic peeling) no more than once a week. Immediately after the procedure, apply a nourishing cream.
● Mandatory use of SPF products when outdoors.

Dehydrated Skin

Causes: acute lack of water. This condition can occur in people with any skin type.

Sensation: dryness, dull skin tone, appearance of fine lines, puffiness around the eyes.
Important: dehydrated skin is a result of lifestyle, climate, and diet. This issue can and should be addressed.

Care:
● Regular intake of sufficient amounts of water. The guideline for adults is 1.5–2 liters per day. Fruits and vegetables with high water content (watermelon, orange, apple, cucumber, tomato, zucchini, etc.) also help replenish moisture throughout the day.
● Continuous use of hydrating serums and toners containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe.
● Use of a humidifier (especially during the heating season).
● Full sleep of at least 7–8 hours per night.

Understanding your skin type, its characteristics, and needs will help you maintain youthfulness and avoid unnecessary spending on ineffective skincare products.
